Officials are concerned that the Ukraine war could escalate.
The U.S. Embassy in Minsk, Belarus, issued a warning to U.S. citizens to depart that nation immediately.
Officials said, “Consider departing via the remaining border crossings with Lithuania and Latvia, or by plane. U.S. citizens are not permitted to enter Poland overland from Belarus. Do not travel to Russia or to Ukraine.”
They reported that “the Lithuanian government on August 18” closed a number of border crossings, and that “the Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian governments have stated that further closures of border crossings with Belarus are possible.” Four crossings remain open for now.
The embassy also cited the support by Belarusian authorities for Russia’s attack on Ukraine as well as the presence of Russian military forces in Belarus, “arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential of civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus.”
The advisory said that “If anyone decides to travel to the country, they should not rely on the U.S. government for assistance.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary of State Blinken as he oversees the diplomatic efforts of the U.S. State Department.
- For U.S. citizens currently in Belarus to heed the embassy’s warning and depart that nation quickly.
